Geneva Murray

FORT WORTH -- A lifetime resident of the Stop Six area, Geneva Murray was a staunch supporter of family, church and the family business. She was among the first of classes to graduate from historic I.M. Terrell high school following the school's move to the current location in 1938. Although she had several positions in the restaurant and hospitality arena, her real career would become that of a mom, volunteer, grandmother and servant to her family and friends. In the mid 40's she met Willie Murray and they were married in 1948. Once blessed with children, Geneva devoted her energies to raising her two daughters - participating in the PTA, serving as homeroom mom and volunteering in various capacities. She was also an active partner in the family business - Skinner's Barbeque. The family business was among the first black owned companies in the area employing up to (8) people. It also served as a training ground for area youngsters seeking summer employment. Following the death of her husband in 1992, Geneva kept the business opened along with her sister Ethylene Cavanah until 1994 - perpetuating a 40 year run that started in 1954. She worked as a senior Usher and was a faithful member of the Women's Sunday School Class. In later years she served on the Pastor's Aid and Decorating Committees. Since 2010 Geneva resided at Heartland Rehab and Long Term Care facility in Hurst where she continued to be a blessing to the residents and staff. She knew the power of faith and maintained hers throughout her 96 years. Those left to cherish her memory include: Her daughters- Glenda Murray Thompson and Jennefer Murray; Grandson - Glenn Murray; Nieces - Bonnie Kilgore, Bessie Richards, Rochelle Bowie; Long- time family friend - Flossie Roberts and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation will be at Williams Lucas Funeral Home from 2:30-6:30pm on Thursday, August 25.
