Joel Thomas Berens was called home to Heaven on Tuesday, February 24. He was born on October 7, 1976, to Leon and Debbie Berens. Joel graduated from St. Marys High School in 1995. He was very active in sports and played football, basketball, and baseball. He went to Allen Co. Community College on a baseball scholarship. He also attended Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas. Later, he worked for Higgins Stone and Anderson News before becoming a conductor with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway where he was employed at the time of his death. Joel met the love-of-his-life, Mona Mahmoud and married her on August 10, 2013, in the Dominican Republic. She survives at home. In addition to Mona and his parents, he is survived by his older brother, Chad Berens and wife, Leslie Berens; two nephews, Micah and Pejah Berens; his father-in-law, Mohamed Mahmoud, and wife, Nevine Mahmoud; mother-in-law, Kelli Doyle ; brother-in-law, Mo Mahmoud, and wife, Ada; brothers-in-law Sammy, Ali; sister-in-law, Sarah, many aunts and uncles, cousins, wonderful friends, and their beloved dog, Molly. Our dear Joel, taken too soon. We’ll miss your smile, your chuckle, and your unflappable manner. We know you rest in the Savior’s arms where we will see you again one day. Rest in peace, dear Joel.
