Leon James Levitt was born January 16th, 1924 in Cairo, Ill. to Patrick James (PJ) and Rosanna Graves Levitt. He graduated from St. Joseph High School in Cairo, Ill in June 1941. He went to work as a draftsman for the Robertson Aircraft Company at Lambert Field, St. Louis, MO. He enlisted as an Aviation Cadet in the Army Air Corps in Nov. 1942. He served his country for 45 years as an officer in the Army Air Corp and United States Air Force Reserves, retiring as a Major. He flew P-51 Mustangs in Europe during WWII with the 368th FS/359th FG. He was awarded the Golden Medal of Vasa – Eighth Class by King Gustav V, of Sweden. As a member of the Air Force Reserves, he flew F-80 Shooting Star, F-86 Super Sabre (117th FBS/448thFBG) from Dallas Naval Air Station/Hensley Field, and C-119 Flying Boxcar (923rd Troop Carrier Grp) at Carswell, AFB. He served as the group engineer for the 512th Military Airlift Wing and in RED HORSE until his retirement. He attended the University of Southern California, Louisiana State University and graduated from Southern Methodist University with a BS in Civil Engineering. He married the love of his life, Dorothy Jean Blumer and they have been together for over 64 years. He was a registered professional engineer and land surveyor in Texas and Louisiana. He was founder and principal of Levitt Engineers for 52 years providing civil and structural engineering services for residential and commercial developments throughout the state and for Navy Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He truly loved civil engineering and made the world a better place for mankind. He was a charter member of St John the Apostle Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He served as board member and president of the 359th Fighter Group Association. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, sister, Rosemary, brothers, John Ed and Raymond, and daughter, Mary Elizabeth. Leon is survived by his wife Dorothy, sister-in-law Lori of Bonita Bay, FL, cousin, Sister Kay Kolb, SSND of Denton, TX, sons, John (Debra) and Charles (Rosie), daughters, Kathy Strayer and Patty (PJ) Lussier, grandsons Scott (Jaclyn) Strayer, Phillip, Thomas, and John Levitt, granddaughters Lori (Brent) King of Los Angeles, Katlyn Levitt, Mary Kate Levitt, and Paige Lussier, great-grandson, Logan Strayer, several beloved nieces and nephews, and many lifelong friends.
