Shirley Ann Williams Lewis

On October 8, 2018, surrounded by loved ones, Shirley W Lewis went home to join her ancestors at the age of 73 after fiercely battling ALS for many years. Shirley lived a life of freedom. She taught others to push through fear and dare to experience new things. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, her family moved to Fort Worth while she was a young girl. She graduated from Paul Lawrence Dunbar High, and attended UT Austin and UT Arlington. Her career led her to serve the community as an apartment manager, a career placement specialist, a federal auditor, a federal civil rights investigator, and a champion of community development. She ended her career helping children re-learn how to enjoy the outdoors as Executive Director of KEEN Group, Inc. She served as a church volunteer, volunteer mediator and union steward while serving on numerous boards and committees. Shirley was a staunch civil rights and environmental activist, attending marches, protests, and community events always advocating for non-violence, equality, and community improvement. She was an avid bid whist player who loved to travel, with some of her favorite trips being Jamaica, Nicaragua, Ghana, South Africa, and Costa Rica. She also loved music, discussing current events, and hosting family and friends. Shirley will be fondly remembered by Johnny, her devoted husband of 47 years, daughter Erin, siblings Van (Edna), Faye, Frankie, and Tommy, sister from another mother, Linda Cameron, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Shirley is reunited in the light with her parents, Thomas and Bessie Williams as well as her brother Johnny Melvin Williams. A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held on October 27, 2018 at 10:00am at Williams and Lucas Funeral Home, 517 N. Sylvania, Fort Worth, TX. MEMORIAL DONATIONS may be made to KEEN Group, Inc. to help continue the work Shirley started, getting kids outdoors and teaching them photography skills.
