Jessie Wayne McHenry, born June 12, 1958, in Fort Worth, Texas, to the late Tracy L. McHenry and Fred Adams, went to be in the arms of his Savior on December 3, 2025.
Jessie became a father at the age of 20 with the birth of his daughter, Jessica. As his mother’s first-born son after three daughters, he held a special place in her heart. Jessie retired from ABF after 30 years as a dedicated truck driver. A gifted mechanic from a young age, he once built an entire engine in the garage, just because he could! He was also a creator at heart: a songwriter, guitarist, artist, and a man who seemed able to do just about anything he set his mind to.
Jessie loved watching cartoons, listening to music, and attending live performances. He was a proud creator and leader of the gospel band Sabbath, where his love of music and ministry came together. He attended I.M. Terrell High School in Fort Worth and was a devoted member and minister at Christian Community Church in North Fort Worth. He loved to hear about and celebrate his family’s achievements. Spending time with the Lord was a top priority in his life, and he professed his faith boldly and joyfully to everyone he met.
He was known for his remarkable sense of humor, his giving spirit, and his role as a protector of his family. Jessie avoided conflict, respected all (especially women), loved deeply, and embodied generosity in every season of life. If ever the word “giver” needed a picture, his would be the one.
Jessie was preceded in death by his parents, Tracy and Zelvin Ethley, Sr.; his father, Fred Adams; sister, Lavon “Red” Emmitt; and brothers-in-law, Kevin Cathey and Paul Hopkins.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Jessica Johnson and husband, Eric, of Jacksonville, Florida; grandchildren, Jaylen Johnson, Nathan Johnson, and Aliyah Johnson; siblings, Janie Cathey of Fort Worth; Teresa Bedford and husband, Lester, of Everman; Vickie Hopkins of Crowley; Darryl Ethley and wife, Melva, of Arlington; Arington Ethley of Fort Worth; and Larena “Diane” Payne and husband, Vincent, of Fort Worth. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and a host of friends who loved him dearly.
