Milton E. Wright

Milton Eugene Wright was born at home on December 12, 1928, near Justin, Texas to Roy and Cora Wright. He is preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Verda McCrary Wright, daughter Jana Wright, brother Wayne Wright, sisters Louise Garner and Betty Sue Godbey. Milton is survived by son Mike Wright (wife Celia Kay), daughter Krista Johnson (husband Ronald), granddaughter Roni Herring (husband John), grandson Jeremy Johnson, great-grandchildren, Emma Velastegui (husband Emmanuel), Caedon Herring, Grace Herring, and great-great-granddaughter Maranatha Velastegui. Milton worked at a feed mill in Roanoke and at Fannin’s Feed Mill in Justin. During this time he met Verda Lee McCrary on a blind date on April Fool’s Day set up by his sister in law, Mary. They married two months later on May 28,1949. He worked for a short time at Consolidated Aircraft in Ft. Worth. After being laid off, he began doing construction work with his uncle, Charlie Smith. This was the beginning of his love for carpentry. He joined the Carpenter’s Union as an apprentice, working during the day and attending school at night to become a Journeyman Carpenter. In 1951, he built his home in White Settlement on the weekends with Verda helping at his side. He did all the electrical and plumbing work as well. They completed the house in 3 years and it was completely paid off by the day they moved in. He was the manager of Stockman’s Lumber Co. in Ft. Worth and also worked at Azle Avenue Lumber Yard. In 1964 he started his own carpentry business doing remodels, cabinets and general building construction. He operated this business until he retired in 1995. After he retired he continued helping family and friends with projects. He could build and fix anything and was often in his well-stocked garage, known as The Shop, working on something. Milton was an excellent gardener. He grew many fruits and vegetables in his large home garden and also had pecan trees that produced wonderful harvests. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed building and driving his dunebuggies at their Rock Hill getaway. He and Verda were expert garage-sale shoppers. They were also “rock hounds,” hunting for and polishing semi-precious stones. He made numerous belt buckles with these treasures. Milton attended Cook Heights Church of Christ and West Freeway Church of Christ. He and Verda served in the Benevolence Ministry for many years, providing food, clothes and household items for people in need. He was a man of faith and repeatedly read the Bible from cover to cover until his eyes grew too weak. Shortly after Verda’s death in 2019, Milton suffered a severe burn. He received treatment at the Parkland Burn Unit for 5 weeks and family was told that he would succumb to his burn. However, with God’s help and the excellent nurse care of his daughter, Krista, he made a full recovery and lived seven more years. After a fall at home in late May, he declined quickly and passed away on June 24, 2026 at the age of 97. Milton was affectionately known as Pappaw to his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great granddaughter. He was loving and kind and an excellent model of faith, hard work and perseverance. His love and wisdom will be greatly missed by family and friends. Visitation will be held at West Freeway Church of Christ, 1900 S. Las Vegas Trail, in Ft. Worth on Friday, July 3rd at 9:30 am. Funeral service will follow, beginning at 10:00 am. Graveside service will be at Aurora Cemetery, 509 Cemetery Rd. Aurora, TX at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Missions Ministry at West Freeway Church of Christ in memory of Milton.
