BEDFORD -- Nancy Lee Jones, our sweet mother, passed Thursday night, June 19, 2014, at 11:49 p.m. due to lung cancer. We only found out she had cancer about a month ago and were surprised it traveled so fast. Graveside service: 11 a.m. Wednesday in Mount Olivet Cemetery at 2501 N Sylvania Ave. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Lucas Funeral Home, 1321 Precinct Line Road, in Hurst. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Dallas Cat Lady at www.dallascatlady.org. This is an organization that helped Mom to find homes for many a stray. She met our father as a young man when he wore a leather jacket, ducktail and rode a motorcycle. Later he joined the Navy and they were married. They were together for 61 years, which includes the two years after his passing in 2012, as their love was strong and she never considered herself a widow. Mother was an accomplished artist in her own right, which includes four paintings of a village covering the four seasons in the Grandma Moses style. She was also involved in toll painting and did so with great detail normally not seen within this style. She was a fun-loving woman of Irish decent that was once known to paint the fire hydrant in their frontyard green along with shamrocks on the street with "Erin Go Bragh" in the center. She had a soul too gentle for this earth but loved life and all the creatures that made their way to her door. Neighborhood children were always attracted to her and called her "Grandma Nancy." Once a neighborhood boy brought her a badly injured snake that could not be saved, but to help soothe the child she placed a bandage around the wound. She could have a wicked sense of humor. One of her daughters once brought a hurt vulture home on a Saturday. They had to keep it until the wildlife rescue opened on Monday. When asked what to feed it without hesitation she replied, "I guess we could dig up Barney" (our dog that had died a week or so before). Everyone fell out laughing. Survivors: She will be greatly missed by her daughters, Donna Pitchford and her spouse, Harold Pitchford, Judy Jones-Krivitskiy, and Laura Jones and her spouse, Drew Morris. She will also be missed by her three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren not to mention all of her friends, neighborhood children and the furry babies.
