HOUSTON -- Sadye Maye Carshon Garsek passed away Friday evening, Dec. 3, 2010, at a Houston nursing facility where she had resided for the last eight years. Service: 10 a.m. Monday in Ahavath Sholom Cemetery, 411 N. University Drive. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, consideration of contributions to the Rabbi Isadore Garsek Patriotic Gardens at Congregation Ahavath Sholom, 4050 S. Hulen St., Fort Worth, Texas 76109, or to a charity of one's choice, is suggested. Mrs. Garsek, widow of Rabbi Isadore Garsek, a native of Fort Worth, was born in July 1917. She was educated in Fort Worth public schools. Later, she attended the University of Texas at Austin. Her parents, David and Ella Carshon, were leaders in the Fort Worth business and Jewish community and from whose influences she developed her strong feelings of Judaism and her love of Israel and of her city and community. Sadye Maye met her husband, Isadore, when he served as rabbi of Congregation Shaareth Israel, the orthodox synagogue in Lubbock. They met at a Haddasah-ZOA (Zionist Organization of America) convention in Fort Worth in 1939 and married the following year. When the World War II began, her husband enlisted as a chaplain and was stationed in Newport News, Va. Sadye Maye was able to join him for much of the time. Following the war, the Garseks moved to Fort Worth where her husband was asked to serve as rabbi of Congregation Ahavath Sholom, which he faithfully served for over 33 years. Mrs. Garsek was a wonderful and supportive wife and mother, who took on leadership positions in many organizations. Among them were Hadassah, the Ladies Auxiliary and B'nai Brith Women, not to mention all of the times she served as president of the PTA at each of her children's schools. She was also active at the Fort Worth Children's Hospital where she served as president of its auxiliary. Sadye Maye Garsek was truly a rebbetzin par excellence. Aside from all of these activities, she was a loving and remarkable wife, a marvelous, caring mother, and a very proud grandmother and great-grandmother. Her oldest son, David, passed away in June of this year. She will be lovingly and forever missed. Survivors: In addition to her children, Rabbi Edward Garsek and Sara of Toledo, Ohio, Elliott Garsek and Patty of Fort Worth and Barbi Garsek Topek and Stanley of Houston, Mrs. Garsek is survived by 11 grandchildren and more than 20 great-grandchildren, all of whom lovingly called her "Mama," and nieces and nephews and their families.
